On Tuesday, February 2nd, forty days after Christmas, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Because it echoes the Christmas festival, this day is a celebration of light in darkness. Its Gospel reading (Luke 2:22-40) tells of the old man Simeon calling the infant Jesus a “light to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.” For nine centuries, it has been traditional to bless candles on this day. Because of its simplicity and beauty, the candle continues to be used when the Church gathers for prayer, both in public places and in the home. You are invited to bring a candle with you to 8:15 am Mass on February 2nd to be blessed and then to take home for your special prayer time.
